Atlantic bluefin tuna have returned to waters off North East England for the first time in around 60 years, marking a striking change for a species once absent from the North Sea.

A University of Exeter team has tagged five fish off the coast of Whitby, the first time bluefin have been tagged in this part of England. The tags will help scientists understand where the fish travel and how different populations use UK waters.

Scarborough was famous for bluefin fishing in the 1930s before the species disappeared from the area as stocks declined. Their return does not remove the need for careful management, but it gives a rare opportunity to a marine recovery while it is happening.
