Twenty voluntary and community organisations across Newcastle are sharing £400,000 for practical improvements to buildings, services and neighbourhood spaces.

The grants range from £10,700 to £30,000. Recipients include Elswick Community Pool, Disability North, youth projects, community centres, health organisations, arts groups and local sports clubs.

Friends of Jesmond Library receives £25,000 towards maintaining its volunteer-run , while Jobes Boxing Club gets £25,000 for changing and shower facilities and Shieldfield Art Works receives £14,900 for accessibility improvements.

It is the sort of funding where the can be wonderfully literal: a door becomes easier to use, a shower gets installed, a roof survives another winter and a local service can keep doing its job.
