People across Sunderland are rallying around 15-year-old Jude Hazard as his family raises money to explore specialist overseas for an extremely rare cancer affecting his heart.

Jude was admitted to hospital in July after worsening breathlessness and underwent emergency surgery after doctors found a large tumour in his heart. His family says the cancer, an intimal sarcoma, is exceptionally rare and that treatment options in the UK are limited.

The appeal has sparked a string of community fundraisers. A relative is preparing to take on the Three Peaks challenge in 24 hours, while local businesses, care homes and residents have also organised events and donations.

The circumstances are frightening, but the response around the family is the part worth holding onto: a city turning concern into practical help, one fundraiser, donation and shared link at a time.
