Sign language users in Northern Ireland have gained formal legal recognition after the Sign Language Act received Royal Assent.

The is intended to strengthen recognition and support for sign language and make it easier for Deaf people to participate in society and access public services with greater independence.

For campaigners and families, the significance goes beyond a new line in the statute book. Legal recognition gives public bodies a clearer for thinking about communication access rather than treating it as an optional extra.

The Department for Communities described the Act as a landmark moment for the Deaf community and for people who have campaigned over many years for greater recognition and rights.

The next test will be : whether the legal change leads to more consistent, practical access to information and services for sign language users in everyday life.
