A contactless donation scheme in Reading has raised more than £7,400 for homelessness support and will now continue until at least 2029.

Tap for Reading lets residents and visitors donate at points around the town or online. The money is distributed through Launchpad Reading, The Salvation Army, St Mungo’s and YMCA Reading.

Reading Borough Council says more than 50 people have directly benefited so far, with donations paying for clothing, food, household items, travel to appointments, training and practical help such as identification needed to open bank accounts or register with health services.

The scheme also covers its own processing costs so that 100 per cent of public donations homelessness partners. It turns a brief tap of a bank card into something decidedly less abstract at the other end.
