Young people in Berkshire have helped give Newbury Racecourse Station a new look through a community mural inspired by the history and character of the racecourse and railway.

The project brought together Newbury Racecourse, Great Western Railway, Berkshire Youth and City Arts Newbury. Young people taking part in Berkshire Youth programmes contributed ideas that were developed into the finished artwork by mural artist Layla Cope.

The design continues across waiting shelters and the pedestrian footbridge, creating a connected visual welcome for people arriving at the station.

Funding came through Great Western Railway’s Customer and Community Improvement Fund. The station first opened in 1905, on the same day as Newbury Racecourse’s inaugural meeting, giving the project a chance to connect a long local history with ideas created by a new generation.
