The University of Sussex has hosted its biggest chess tournament yet, bringing five international grandmasters onto the same campus as amateur players, teenagers and one competitor aged just five.

More than 200 players and 100 spectators attended the six-day Sussex Chess Congress in July. Five-year-old Aahana Gupta was among the youngest competitors, while the Masters field included five grandmasters.

The event also included a two-day chess summer school for young players and amateur competitions across three ability levels. Ukrainian grandmaster Eldar Gasanov won the Masters section with eight points from nine games.

It is difficult to think of many sports where a primary-school child, a university student and an internationally titled adult can meaningfully occupy the same event. Chess remains pleasingly odd in that respect.
