Young people across York and North Yorkshire are set to get free access to more arts, culture and activities through a new Cultural Passport programme.

The scheme is aimed particularly at 11 to 18-year-olds from communities where access to creative opportunities is lower. Arts and heritage organisations can apply for grants of up to £20,000 to provide activities through the programme.

The ambition goes beyond filling spare afternoons. The passport is intended to build skills, raise aspirations about creative careers and support through participation.

For a young person, access to culture can hinge on something as mundane as a ticket price or whether anyone ever tells them the opportunity exists. The passport is designed to remove some of those small gates.
