Leicester puts £4m into brighter streets, public spaces and bringing empty shops back to life

Leicester is investing £4 million in a package of practical city-centre improvements covering everything from lighting and public spaces to empty shops and event .

The programme includes £300,000 for gateways into the centre, £250,000 for improvements at antisocial-behaviour hotspots, £200,000 to help bring vacant units back into use and £200,000 for events infrastructure.

Further funding will go into Market Place and the Lanes, while £1.75 million is being set aside towards future around Midland Street.

None of those individual lines is likely to become a tourist attraction. Together, though, cleaner routes, brighter spaces, occupied shops and easier events can make the centre feel distinctly more alive.
