A new community fund has opened in Sandwich, giving local charities, schools and community groups the chance to apply for grants that could help improve life in the town.

The Georgina Maddox Community Fund has been created through a legacy left by long-standing Sandwich resident Georgina Maddox. The charitable trust established in her name is working with Kent Community Foundation to distribute the money.

Most grants will be worth up to £3,000, although awards of up to £5,000 may be considered in exceptional circumstances. Organisers expect around 15 grants to be made in the first round.

The fund is looking for projects that directly benefit people living in Sandwich. Priorities include increasing participation in sport and healthy activity, reducing isolation through arts and community events, supporting the physical and of disadvantaged children, and protecting or improving the town's natural environment.

Applications opened on 1 September and close on 30 September 2026, with decisions expected in mid-November.

The new fund gives local organisations a relatively accessible pot of money for practical neighbourhood projects, while also turning a local resident's legacy into something that can continue supporting Sandwich for years to come.
