Golfers raise more than £30,000 for Oakhaven Hospice with a little help from Bruce Grobbelaar

A charity golf day on the Hampshire coast has raised more than £30,000 for Oakhaven Hospice, with former Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar joining the evening as guest speaker.

Thirty-one teams of four took part at Barton-on-Sea Golf Club on 15 July, competing for the Oakhaven Charity Bowl and prizes donated by local businesses and supporters.

With matched funding included, the event raised more than £30,000. The money supports Oakhaven’s hospice, home-care and services for people living with life-limiting illness and their families across the New Forest, Totton and Waterside communities.

The charity says it is currently supporting more than 650 patients and families at any one time. Only around 11 per cent of its funding comes from government , leaving fundraising, shops, donations and gifts in wills to cover most of the rest.

So the day’s final scorecard matters rather less than the other number attached to it: another £30,000-plus towards keeping specialist care available close to home.
