The University of Liverpool will lead a £13 million doctoral training programme designed to help healthcare professionals combine knowledge with advanced data science.

MEDATA is backed by £12 million from Wellcome and £1 million from Health Data UK. Liverpool will work with universities in Birmingham, Cambridge, Leeds and Strathclyde to train clinician data scientists from a range of healthcare professions.

The programme will focus on using complex health data to improve medicines research and how existing are used. A second , Forward North, will widen opportunities for healthcare professionals to enter research careers through placements, mentoring and doctoral training.

Modern medicine is producing more data than ever. The useful part is having people who understand both the numbers and what happens to an actual patient on the other side of them.
