An emergency appeal to help Dunwich Heath recover from July’s wildfire has reached nearly three quarters of its £500,000 target.
The National Trust launched the fundraiser on 1 August after fire damaged a large area of the internationally important Suffolk heathland. Donations will help make the site safe, fund ecological surveys and support natural regrowth and active restoration where needed.
Any money raised beyond the target will support other National Trust landscapes affected by fires this year, including sites in Northern Ireland, Wales, the Peak District and the Isle of Wight.
The fire itself was devastating. The hopeful part is what happens next: thousands of people putting money behind the slow, unglamorous work of helping a landscape become wild again.
