Cromer RNLI volunteer shows there is more than one way to help save lives at sea

Kate Roberts now holds five volunteer roles at Cromer RNLI and is encouraging people with different skills and interests to find a place in the station team.

A Cromer RNLI volunteer who now helps the station in five different roles is encouraging other people to consider getting involved, even if joining a lifeboat crew is not for them.

Kate Roberts joined the station in May 2024 after taking early retirement. She started as station administrator and has since added responsibilities as ashes coordinator and crew fund treasurer, while also volunteering in the RNLI shop and training as shore crew.

Cromer RNLI is currently recruiting for a range of volunteer roles, including boat and shore crew, shop volunteers, water safety and communications positions. The charity provides training for the roles and says the station depends on people contributing many different skills behind the scenes as well as on the water.

Kate’s experience is a useful reminder that lifesaving organisations are built from much more than the people visible on the boat. Administration, fundraising, public information and practical support all help keep a volunteer station running.
