A community building first constructed in 1863 has reopened in Barrow Hill after being transformed into a modern hub for food support, health, families and social activity.
Barrow Hill Memorial Hall now includes a community pantry, bar and café, family hub, physical-activity space and health hub.
The refurbishment was led by Barrow Hill Community Trust with backing from the Staveley Town Deal and East Midlands Combined County Authority. Upgrades also covered the roof, heating and electrical systems.
The next phase is expected to create a reading room and additional community venue upstairs. The building has already survived more than 160 years; the refurbishment gives it a considerably stronger chance of remaining useful rather than merely historic.
