Sheffield’s long-running street-tree movement is putting some of its energy into a new question: where should the next trees go?

Sheffield Tree Action Groups has been developing planting proposals in parts of the city identified as having lower tree equity, including Spital Hill, Low Edges and Jordanthorpe.

Earlier this year the group reported submitting 20 potential planting locations around Spital Hill, five in Low Edges and three in Jordanthorpe, while allocating remaining campaign funds towards additional street planting for winter 2026/27.

Residents and businesses can also support new planting through the wider Sheffield Street Tree and the national Trees for Streets sponsorship scheme, including crowdfunding an entire street rather than paying for a single tree.

Sheffield’s street trees have a complicated recent history, but this is a more constructive chapter: community energy that once focused heavily on preventing loss is increasingly helping put new trees into places where shade, and greener streets are less evenly distributed.
