Queen Mary secures £25m to train researchers in health, AI, waste and sustainable technology

Four new doctoral programmes will support around 80 researchers, including widening-participation scholarships and training for healthcare professionals moving into clinical research.

Queen Mary University of London has secured £25 million for four doctoral programmes training across healthcare, , waste, pollution and technology.

A £5 million Leverhulme Trust programme will support up to 30 PhD researchers exploring the global waste crisis, including six scholarships designed to widen participation for students from under-represented groups.

More than £20 million from Wellcome will support around 50 healthcare professionals across three further programmes. Doctors, nurses, midwives and allied health professionals will be able to combine experience with in underrepresented diseases, environmental health and the safe use of and digital tools in care.

The first cohorts are expected to begin in 2027. Training researchers rarely produces an instant headline-making invention, but it is how future discoveries acquire the people capable of doing the work.
