Sculcoates Park in Hull has formally reopened after a makeover designed around what local residents said they wanted from the space.
The improvements include new footpaths and lighting, natural play equipment, fencing around the children’s play area and a refurbished multi-use games area built around the park’s well-known Red Top basketball court.
New picnic tables and a chess table have also been installed, while free summer activities at the reopening included football and wheelchair basketball.
The work formed part of the Stepney High Street Accelerator programme, which brought almost £750,000 into the wider area for public-space improvements.
The most encouraging bit is not really the new furniture or fresh paint. It is that a public space people already cared about now gives them more reasons to use it, linger in it and feel that it belongs to them again.
