Rare White Park cattle join Castle Howard’s 440-acre nature recovery project

A herd of rare White Park cattle has been introduced to Castle Howard’s Bog Hall Habitat Bank, where conservation grazing will help restore 440 acres.

A herd of rare White Park cattle has moved into Castle Howard’s 440-acre Bog Hall Bank as part of a 30-year nature-restoration project.

The all-female herd will live outdoors year-round, grazing new meadows and helping create a more varied habitat structure. White Park cattle are priority-listed by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust and are considered one of Britain’s most ancient native cattle breeds.

The wider project has already restored species-rich meadows, created ponds and leaky dams and installed five kilometres of fencing. Beavers are also planned for release into the project area this autumn.

Local schoolchildren have contributed drawings for signs around the site, meaning they will be able to watch the landscape change through their own school years. is often discussed in decades; here, children nearby may actually grow up alongside it.
