Bristol team backs technology designed to cut AI data-centre energy waste

A technology company working with University of Bristol has secured more than £600,000 to develop electronics that could reduce energy waste in data centres.

HexSeed Technology is developing ultra-thin diamond coatings for electronic components used in data-centre power systems. Diamond conducts heat extremely well, which could help components run cooler and more efficiently.

The technical challenge is applying those coatings at temperatures low enough not to damage completed semiconductor devices. Bristol researchers are working with the company on a lower-temperature process, turning an unusual material property into a possible route towards less wasteful computing .
