Patients leaving Barnet Hospital's emergency department or urgent centre can now have discharge prescriptions sent electronically to a community pharmacy instead of carrying a paper form.
The new Electronic Prescription Service allows clinicians to medicines directly to a patient's nominated pharmacy, which can be changed through the NHS App.
The Royal Free London says the change should speed up discharge, reduce prescription errors and ease pressure on the hospital's own outpatient pharmacy. It also means patients may be able to collect medicines closer to home or work rather than waiting on site.
The rollout starts in Barnet's emergency services before expanding more widely across the trust. It is not glamorous digital transformation. It is the much better sort: one fewer piece of paper standing between somebody leaving hospital and getting the medicine they need.
