A trial at University College London Hospitals has used to support a neurosurgeon in real time during an operation to remove a brain tumour threatening a patient’s sight.
The system analysed the live surgical video feed and highlighted critical structures at the base of the brain. UCLH says the operation successfully removed the tumour while protecting the patient’s vision.
The technology was developed at UCL and is being tested through a clinical trial funded by the National Institute for Health and Care . It is an early clinical use rather than a finished replacement for surgical judgement, but it shows how can be designed as an additional tool for specialist teams during complex procedures.
