More than 17,000 young people across Wales came forward for a first dose of the MenB vaccine during the opening four weeks of a targeted vaccination programme.
The free two-dose offer is aimed at young people at higher risk as they move into university or residential , where shared accommodation and close social contact can increase the risk of meningococcal disease.
The programme covers people born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008, as well as first-time higher or residential further education students under 25.
The second dose is given around a month after the first. The encouraging part of the early figures is not simply the headline number, but that thousands of young people have already chosen before term begins rather than waiting for illness to make the decision urgent.
