Volunteers in York have been steadily improving Fulford Cemetery, giving their time to clear paths, maintain benches, tackle weeds and keep the large burial ground welcoming for families and visitors.

Regular sessions have brought together residents, people with connections to the cemetery, staff from local businesses and groups including GoodGym. The work began before City of York Council took temporary responsibility for the site in 2025 and has continued alongside discussions about its long-term management.

Volunteers have been edging paths, clearing leaves, planting and carrying out general maintenance across the cemetery. The council says more sessions are planned and new volunteers are welcome to join.

It is the kind of improvement that happens a little at a time rather than through one dramatic project: people giving a few hours, returning regularly and gradually making a shared local space easier to care for and visit.
