A Swindon man who says alcohol once dominated his life is now two years sober and spending his time helping cook free community meals from surplus food.
Daniel Norrish, 57, volunteers with FoodCycle Swindon after completing 13 weeks of rehabilitation and making a determined break from years of heavy drinking.
FoodCycle uses surplus supermarket food to create free meals, bringing volunteers and local residents together around a shared table. For Daniel, becoming part of that routine has helped give recovery a social purpose rather than leaving a blank space where drinking used to be.
His story is a reminder that volunteering can work in more than one direction. The people eating the meals receive food and company, while the people preparing them can find structure, connection and a reason to keep showing up.
