Kirkleatham was turned into a sprawling outdoor stage as Redcar’s award-winning Between the Tides festival returned with two days of free arts and entertainment for families.

The grounds of Kirkleatham Village and Walled Garden hosted theatre, puppetry, circus, dance, storytelling, live music, workshops and roaming performers on 22 and 23 August.

The 2026 programme included aerial work on a seven-metre circular structure, juggling and comedy, street performance and creative activities, while a new fringe day earlier in the week gave teenagers their own pop-up performances and experiences in Redcar town centre.

Between the Tides won Best Event of the Year at the previous North East Cultural Awards. Keeping the main weekend free gives families a cultural day out without a ticket price attached, which matters when days out can become expensive remarkably quickly.
