The National Trust has moved its entire retail plant to peat-free growing media, making the plants it sells across the UK 100% peat-free.
Peatlands store large amounts of carbon and provide important wildlife , but extracting peat for horticulture damages those ecosystems and can release stored carbon. The charity says removing peat from its plant supply chain is a practical step towards reducing that pressure.
The Trust is also using the milestone to call for faster progress on wider action to end horticultural peat use. For gardeners buying from National Trust outlets, the immediate change is simpler: every plant on sale should now come without horticultural peat.
