Residents help bring in new East Cambridgeshire powers against dangerous and anti-social driving

Residents’ concerns about dangerous and disruptive driving have helped lead to new powers across East Cambridgeshire.

A Public Spaces Protection Order came into force on 24 August, giving authorities another tool to tackle behaviour including excessive-speed driving that creates danger or nuisance in public places.

East Cambridgeshire District Council says the order was introduced with Cambridgeshire Constabulary in response to concerns raised by residents, businesses and local communities.

The point is not to turn every imperfect bit of driving into an offence. The order is aimed at repeated or that makes public spaces feel unsafe.

It is a small example of community feedback making the jump from complaint to actual policy. Residents raised a problem, was gathered, and a new mechanism now exists to do something about it.
