A Durham museum building that had been closed for a decade has reopened as a new £17 million cultural venue bringing contemporary art, local history and community activity under one roof.
The Light opened at Aykley Heads on 22 August on the transformed site of the former Durham Light Infantry Museum and Art Gallery.
Its opening exhibitions include Victory Over the Sun: Encounters with Light, with work by artists including Tracey Emin, Olafur Eliasson, Dan Flavin and Steve McQueen, alongside a permanent exhibition exploring the human history of the Durham Light Infantry.
The redevelopment has added new gallery space as well as areas for education, community activities, events and a café. Entry to The Light itself and the permanent DLI exhibition is free, while the temporary contemporary-art exhibition is ticketed.
After ten years of an important Durham building sitting out of public life, its doors are open again with a broader job: part museum, part gallery, part gathering place.
