A new £17.8 million NHS diagnostic centre has officially opened in Bridgwater, giving people across Somerset more access to tests and scans closer to home.

The Bridgwater Diagnostic Centre sits alongside Bridgwater Community Hospital and was formally opened on 18 August after receiving investment from NHS England.

Community diagnostic centres are designed to move more routine tests away from large acute hospitals, helping patients avoid longer journeys while freeing capacity elsewhere in the health system.

The building itself is new, but the useful idea behind it is straightforward: if a scan or diagnostic test does not need a major hospital around it, bring the equipment closer to the people who do.
