Edinburgh’s King’s Theatre has welcomed audiences back after four years of redevelopment, restoring its Edwardian character while making the 120-year-old building substantially more accessible.

The Grade A-listed theatre reopened in August after a major programme that renewed backstage systems, improved circulation and access, added new public spaces and preserved historic plasterwork, stone and stained glass.

The National Lottery Fund contributed £5.5 million and supported a community activity programme that continued while the theatre itself was closed, taking performances and work into other local spaces.

A heritage building survives best when it remains useful. The King’s has reopened not as a preserved shell, but as a working theatre prepared for another generation of audiences and performers.
