Around 1,250 people have already registered interest in helping Wales host the Tour de France when the Grand Départ arrives in 2027.

Volunteers, officially called JOY Makers, will support the third stage of the men’s race on 4 July 2027 as it travels from Welshpool through towns and valleys before finishing in Cardiff.

No previous volunteering experience is required and training will be provided. People aged 18 to 25 can also access employability training and career mentoring through a linked Readiness to Work scheme.

Major sporting events are normally remembered through the athletes and television pictures. The less visible army in high-vis jackets is what makes the thing function at street level. Wales already has more than a thousand people willing to be part of that side of the story.
