A gym owner who gives free weekly fitness support to people aged over 60 has been named East Dunbartonshire’s Sports Champion for 2026.
Barry Peacock, who lives in Kirkintilloch and runs a gym in Bishopbriggs, received the honour through the Provost’s Community Champion Awards. His nomination highlighted the time gives each week to older residents, helping them learn the basics of exercise, build confidence and gradually challenge themselves.
His contribution stretches beyond the gym. Barry also coaches Torrance 2012s football team in his own time, developing weekly plans designed to improve the young players’ fitness and help them establish healthy habits.
Provost Gillian Renwick said the seniors’ class provides both exercise and a supportive social environment, describing Barry as an example of the sort of contribution the awards were created to recognise.
Barry said seeing people become stronger, healthier and happier was what made the work rewarding, adding that he wanted to show that age need not be a barrier to fitness.
The award is one of six Community Champion honours announced by East Dunbartonshire Council this year, recognising residents whose volunteering, fundraising and community work benefit others.
